After October 7th I prayed for the safe return of the hostages, particularly two little boys and their mother. I prayed until I realized that I was more concerned about them than Israeli leaders were. In fact, I’ve heard a person who was on the Israeli negotiating team say that a month later Hamas offered to release women and children but Netanyahu refused.
Since then I have read Haaretz daily and the Jerusalem Post occasionally and I find Israel to be in a dark place- led by a corrupt and murderous government whose Cabinet members speak openly about Israel’s right to starve to death innocent Gazans and kill their babies. On October 2 more than fifty American medical staff presented Biden with a statement that they were routinely seeing Gazan babies who had been shot in the head by the IDF. This was only reported in the New York Times as Israeli and American media withhold information about IDF atrocities. Every major international organization ( Amnesty International, Oxfam, etc) has accused Israel of committing genocide with the complicity of the so-called Christian leaders in the US.
Until Israelis and Americans confront the brutal and immoral acts of their governments both will become internationally outcasts and deservedly so. This is not to excuse the acts of terrorist groups but to assure we don’t become worse than them. In Haaretz I read “When you seek revenge dig two graves: One for your enemy and one for yourself”
